Front Royal
Front Royal is known as ‘the gateway to Skyline Drive. It’s also in the perfect location to explore Shenandoah National Park, Shenandoah Valley, and the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Not only is the town in a great location, but there are plenty of attractions located in Front Royal. The Main Street Historic District is one of the most popular spots in the town and is home to plenty of historical buildings, museums, and shops. There are also lots of outdoor activities available in the area including biking, fishing, hiking, and kayaking.
When it comes to dining options you’ll have plenty of choices including American, Indian, Italian, and Japanese cuisine. Some of the top restaurants in Front Royal include PaveMint Smokin’ Taphouse, Melting Hot Pizza, and Spelunkers.

Luray
The town of Luray is just a 15-minute drive from Shenandoah National Park so if you’re wanting to stay close by – this is one of the best options.

However, there are plenty of other attractions in the area too including the Garden Maze, the Car & Carriage Caravan Museum, and Shenandoah Heritage Village. You’ll also find some great hiking trails nearby as part of the Appalachian Trail is located here!
There are lots of great places to eat in Luray too including Rancho Viejo Mexican Grill & Cantina, il Vesuvio Restaurant & Pizzeria, and the Gathering Grounds Patisserie & Cafe.

Harrisonburg is the largest town within Shenandoah Valley. It’s just a 35-minute drive from the Swift Run Gap entrance of Shenandoah National Park and is great for budget travelers as there are plenty of accommodation options.
You’ll also find lots of attractions in and around Harrisonburg including the White Oak Lavender Farm, Edith J. Carrier Arboretum, and the Shenandoah Heritage Market. During your time here you can also visit the Harrisonburg Farmers Market, ArtWorks Gallery, and Funky’s Skate Center.
If you decide to stay in Harrisonburg you won’t run out of places to eat either! There are over 200 restaurants to be found here, and five craft breweries if you’re looking to sample the local ale. When it comes to dining options some of the most popular places include Jimmy Madison’s, Texas Roadhouse, and Jack Brown’s Beer & Burger Joint.

It’s located at an elevation of 3,680 feet along Skyline Drive so naturally boasts stunning views of the surrounding area. The property is located on 27 acres of land and is made up of 28 separate buildings that can be found along the ridge.
The lodge offers a variety of accommodation options including premium rooms, small cabins, and suites so you’ll have plenty of choices. There are also lots of amenities at Skyland Lodge including an ATM, a gift shop, and dining options. The Pollock Dining Room is a big hit and guests will also have access to the Mountain Taproom and the ‘Grab N Go’ which is perfect for a quick breakfast before heading to the national park. Guided horseback and pony rides are sometimes available at Skyland Lodge too which is one of the best ways to explore the area.

Big Meadows Lodge
Big Meadows Lodge is another great option if you’re looking to stay within the park itself. It’s generally open from April to November but you’ll want to check on the website beforehand just in case! This lodge is found at mile 51 of Skyline Drive and offers stunning views. It’s also the perfect place to observe the night skies so if you stay here, make sure you take some time to do this!
Big Meadows Lodge offers various accommodation options including the main lodge rooms, traditional rooms, suites, and cabins. There are also plenty of facilities within the main lodge building including the Spottswood Dining Room, the New Market Taproom, and a craft shop. If you’re traveling with your pooch, there are pet-friendly rooms available too and they also offer a ‘Yappy Hour Menu’ for your best friend!

Lewis Mountain Cabins
Lewis Mountain Cabins is located near Luray and is surrounded by the spectacular Blue Ridge Mountains. This accommodation can be found at Skyline Drive’s mile marker 57 and is one of the most popular places to stay in the national park. As you won’t have internet or in-room phones during your stay here, it truly allows you to reconnect with nature and have a digital detox.
Lewis Mountain Cabins typically opens in late spring and then closes in fall. These historic cabins are perfect for everyone and give you an authentic experience of Shenandoah. Although relatively basic, the cabins do come with plenty of amenities including a private bathroom, heating, and electric lights. You’ll also have an outdoor fire pit and a dining area which is great for a BBQ. So, if you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option within Shenandoah National Park this is your best bet!

Luray Hotels
Hotel Laurance
Hotel Laurance is one of the most beautiful hotels in Luray and is just a 16-minute drive from the park entrance. It’s also located near some of Luray’s most popular attractions including the Luray Caverns which is just 1 mile (1.6 km) away! The hotel is within walking distance of many of the local restaurants and shops, and there are plenty of hiking opportunities in the area too.
There are twelve boutique rooms at this hotel and each one is equipped with a kitchen, an en-suite bathroom, and a large lounge area. The most popular suite here is the Oliver Suite! When it comes to luxury, Hotel Laurance is one of the best options out there with its beautiful furnishings, spacious design, and luxury amenities. You’ll find this hotel to be the perfect base for visiting Shenandoah National Park as there is so much to do in the surrounding area.
Hawksbill House
Hawksbill House is a more budget-friendly option if you’re looking to stay in Luray. Just a 16-minute drive from the park entrance and within walking distance of many of the restaurants in town, it’s in a great location. The Pink Theatre is also nearby, and you’ll find plenty of local antique stores to explore.
There are four different room options at this hotel with the most luxurious being the Blue Ridge Room. Some of the rooms even come with mountain views so you can appreciate the beauty of this area. During your stay, a continental breakfast is included which is the perfect way to fuel your day and will save you money along the way. Guests also have access to the on-site hot tub! Hawksbill House is a great accommodation choice but it’s important to note that is an adults-only hotel so isn’t suitable for families with children.

The Hillside Motel
The Hillside Motel is located at the foot of the Blue Ridge Mountains along the scenic Skyline Drive. Just a 13-minute drive from the park entrance, this motel is one of the best options if you’re planning to stay in Luray. It offers scenic views of the surrounding valley and is far enough out of town that you can enjoy a relaxing getaway without the hustle and bustle.

Cardinal Inn is just an 8-minute drive from the Luray Caverns and only a 14-minute drive from the entrance to Shenandoah National Park. Cardinal Inn offers a variety of suites including king, luxury, and honeymoon suites. However, if you choose the Honeymoon Suite then you’re in for a real treat.
