The Definitive List of National Parks in the Northeast (2021 Update)

Post Summary: National Parks of the Northeast

The Northeast United States is home to rolling mountains, rocky coastlines, and a rich Native American and United States history. The region is home to the northern half of the Appalachian Mountains and parts of the Atlantic coastal plain with a significant Atlantic Ocean coastline. The mountains and ocean access play a strong role in the cultural landscape of the region. There are 121 national parks in the Northeast to explore.

The article is a guide to the Northeast National Parks including parks in the states of Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, and West Virginia as well as the District of Colombia. We will cover:

How many National Parks are in the Northeast?

It depends on which states you consider to be in the Northeast and what you are counting as the Northeast. If you consider the US Census Bureau’s definition of the Northeast, Acadia is the only National Park in the Northeast. Personally, I have included Washington, D.C., West Virginia, and Virginia as Northeastern states/areas of the United States. So for the purpose of this list, there are 3 National Parks in the Northeast – Acadia, Shenandoah, and New River Gorge.

If we want to talk about all the National Park Service units in the Northeast, there are 121 national parks in the Northeast. They are divided as follows

  • 3 National Parks
  • 12 National Monuments
  • 25 National Historical Parks
  • 30 National Historic Sites
  • 1 International Historic Site
  • 2 National Battlefield Parks
  • 4 National Battlefields
  • 2 National Military Parks
  • 18 National Memorials
  • 4 National Recreation Areas
  • 3 National Seashores
  • 4 National Rivers
  • 2 National Parkways
  • 2 National Trails
  • 13 Other Designations

Tips on Visiting Northeast National Parks

Best Time to Visit the National Parks in the Northeast

The National Parks of the Northeast are best explored between May and October. This gives you the nicest weather and the parks are usually fully open during these times. The downside to visiting during this time is that the parks are the busiest during this time.

National Parks vs National Parks Units

I’m going to get into a bit of technical semantics. So feel free to skip if you just don’t care and just want to get straight into the National Parks of the Northeast.

The National Park System is made of 423 units that are administrated by the National Park Service. They have a range of designations from “National Historical Park” to “National Seashore” to “National Park” In total there are 19 designations plus a few oddballs. National Park Service considers each of these units to be a national park.

When most people talk about visiting the National Parks, they mean the 63 units that hold the designation “National Park.” These 63 National Parks are the creme of the crop parks (or they are supposed to be but that is getting off-topic). These are typically the big outdoor-focused parks that are worth a 3-5 day visit.

Most people who are National Park Obsessed are usually working on the list of 63 and visiting the other 360 national parks when they are in the area. Some people do have the goal of visiting all 423 which is great but that is so much more work than just visiting 63. Personally, I’m almost done with the 63 and will probably keep working towards the 423 but I really hate visiting battlefields so it will take a lot longer to get motivated to visit them. I lived in Richmond, VA for two years. It took me 18 months to drag myself over to visit the Richmond National Battlefield Park.

How much does it cost to visit a National Park? – National Park Fees & Passes

Surprisingly about 75% of the National Park Service Units are free to visit. That means that only a quarter of the parks charge an entrance fee. Even the parks that do charge a fee it is minimal. It ranges from $5 per person to $35 per vehicle.

If you are planning to explore more than two National Parks or 3-5 other designations in a year, you should plan on getting an America the Beautiful Pass. The pass is $80 and you get unlimited access to all entrance fee-charging in National Parks along with more than 3,000 other federal lands.

If you were to visit the Northeastern National Parks of Acadia and Shenandoah, you will spend $35 each. That is $70 right there. Throw in a visit to one of the Roosevelt sites in New York and within 3 park visits, you have already spent $80 in entrance fees.

>>> You can get the America the Beautiful Pass from REI.

Fee Free Days in 2021

If you don’t plan (or can’t afford to) on purchasing an Ameria the Beautiful Annual Pass, there are six fee-free days each year. You can access the entrance fee-charging national parks for free on these days. Even if you have the Annual Pass, Fee Free Days can be a great time to visit the parks. Many parks have special activities on these days.
